Zusammenfassung

Die akute respiratorische Insuffizienz [„acute respiratory distress syndrome“ (ARDS)] stellt aufgrund ihrer Komplexität und schlechten Prognose eine enorme intensivmedizinische Herausforderung dar. Trotz aller Fortschritte in Forschung und Therapie bleibt die Letalität unakzeptabel hoch. Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, Definitionen, klinische Charakteristika und die Pathogenese des ARDS kurz zu skizzieren und auf gegenwärtige Therapieoptionen und zukünftige Entwicklungen in der Behandlung des ARDS einzugehen.
