Abstract

A previously published equation of state is examined with respect to validity of predicted fugacity values for comparison with mineral reaction equilibria. It is found that values of f H2O should be valid for the range from 0.0 to 0.3 and probably to 0.4 in mole fraction NaCl for temperatures from 300° to 600° C and less accurately to 900° C. Comparison is made with existing experimental results near 630° C for the dehydration of brucite; the agreement is excellent. Comparison with recent results at 850° C from a different experiment is also satisfactory. However, fugacity of NaCl is not given on an absolute basis, even in this range below x NaCl=0.4.
