The authors would like to clarify the different values reported for excess mortality in the Abstract and Results of this paper.

The Abstract states ‘Standardised mortality ratios associated with diabetes, adjusted for age and socioeconomic group, were 1.38 (1.36, 1.41) in men and 1.49 (1.45, 1.52) in women’ i.e. excess mortality of 38% and 49% for men and women, respectively. This contrasts with figures given in the Results where it is stated: ‘The overall excess risk of death among men and women with type 2 diabetes was approximately 40% and 80%, respectively, compared with people without diabetes’. The authors would like to clarify that the reported excess risk of death of 40% for men and 80% for women relates only to people aged 65 years old and in deprivation decile 5, whereas the values reported in the Abstract (excess mortality of 38% and 49% for men and women, respectively) are for the population as a whole.
