Abstract
According to EN 1995 rules, the design limit of perpendicular-to-grain tensile strength in glulam beams depends on the stressed volume. Test results realized on small test beams were converted into practically used sizes which lead to unnecessarily voluminous beams. The now introduced model of calculation describes all known test results clearly better than the volume-based model. The proposal here is based on this further developed model and results in an easier and more precise perpendicular-to-grain tensile strength design rule. A number of beams designed according to different rules demonstrate good accordance of the new proposal with earlier rules and experiences.
