Samenvatting
De kenmerken van chronische werkstress en burnout worden beschreven tegen de achtergrond van de differentiële diagnoses overspannenheid, neurasthenie en depressie. Oververmoeidheid, depersonalisatie en verminderde persoonlijke bekwaamheid lijken de centrale elementen. Een behandelingsmodel wordt beschreven waarin op deze elementen wordt aangegrepen. De behandeling bestaat uit spanningsvermindering, cognitieve therapie, vaardigheidstraining, begeleide herintreding en het voorkomen van terugval. De behandeling wordt met een gevalsbeschrijving geïllustreerd. In de discussie wordt aandacht besteed aan problemen in de behandeling.

Abstract
The features of chronic workstress and burnout are described against the background of differential diagnoses of surmenage, neurasthenia and depression. Exhaustion, depersonalisation and decreased personal effectiveness appear to be the core elements. A treatment model is described based on these elements. The treatment consists of stress reduction, cognitive therapy, skills training, supervised reintegration and relapse prevention. The treatment is illustrated in a case description. In the discussion attention is being paid to pitfalls in treatment.
