Summary

Recently the controversy about the “true” nature and the concept of probability was revived, especially through new attempts to found probability on subjectivism. The paper begins with a succinct presentation and comparison of three types of probability interpretations: the frequentist, logical and subjective conceptions. Then, Kolmogoroff’s axiomatization of probability is discussed. It cannot contribute anything to the empirical validity of probability statements, it is, by the way, expressly not designed for that purpose. Probabilistic concepts which are to overcome the ontological neutrality of (axiomatized) probability are briefly considered, e.g. the likelihood concept and the fiducial argument. Finally the author provides some material concerning the problem whether empirically valid probability judgments are possible. The consideration is guided by a modern (realistic-objectivistic) version of the causality principle.
