Summary
A method for the application of the groupU(3) to the octet version of unitary symmetry is suggested, circumventing the difficulty implicit in the tracelessness of theSU(3)-representations linked with this model. In this way, baryon number is naturally introduced. The meaning ofR-inversion (introduced byM. Gell-Mann) is generalized.
Gell-Mann).

The way in whichGell-Mann (ref. (2)) Report CTSL-20, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, introduced the baryons and the mesons as tensors underSU(3) does not fit the interpretation ofB andR in this paper.
