On the theory of the nematic phase and its possible relation to the mitotic spindle structure

Abstract

Onsager's method of studying the nematic phase is developed for general molecular interactions. It is shown that the symmetry of the molecule helps determine the type of transition that occurs in passing from the isotropic phase to the anisotropic phase.

The possible relation between the nematic phase and spindle structure is briefly discussed.
