Summary
Transient neonatal hypoglycemia, especially when it is accompanied by symptoms, can cause permanent cerebral lesions. Rapid screening methods applied to high-risk infants, associated with early feeding, often lead to the prevention of this feared complication. Thus, in 1973, the incidence of hypoglycemia among all the births at the Geneva Maternity Hospital was only 0.6%. Newborn infants showing signs of intrauterine malnutrition, whatever the gestational age may be, are a particularly exposed group: hypoglycemia was revealed in 15% of these infants.
