Abstract
The method of discrete vortices, described in [1, 2], is used to make a detailed analysis of special features of separated flow over an infinite flat plate at angles of attack 0<α⩽90‡. The flow scheme, based on a perfect fluid model, allows a description of typical features of separated flow. For example, the continuous vortex sheet breaks up with time forming vortex clusters of the Karman street type. The aerodynamic forces on the plate show characteristic “streaks,” observed experimentally. As separation develops the flow becomes periodically fluctuating with time. The period and the amplitude of the normal force fluctuations increase as the angle of attack is increased. The center of pressure is located near the midchord.
