Abstract

Prototheca zopfii and P. wickerhamii are ubiquitous inhabitants of raw and treated rural and municipal sewage. They are found in animal waste and slime flux. From these sources they may contaminate aquatic systems and food and subsequently be eaten by man and animals and then excreted, completing the cycle. Prototheca sp. may infect man and animals after traumatic inoculation.
