Abstract
A survey was conducted among children in the nurseries and primary schools of Abu Dhabi to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic cervical adenopathy in childhood and to attempt to establish its natural history. The survey included 3588 children aged 4–12 years. The overall prevalence was 30% with a peak of 46% at the age of 5–6 years. There was an overall tendency for spontaneous resolution of cervical adenopathy to occur with time. At 12 years of age, the incidence of submandibular adenopathy dropped to 10.6% and that of posterior cervical to 2.3%. Our findings suggest that a more conservative approach be adopted in the management of chronic asymptomatic cervical adenopathy in childhood.
