Recent editorials and utilization data support marked increases in exposure to ionizing radiation through medical imaging procedures, such as nuclear cardiology, with cautionary projections about induced cancer risk.1,2 One report estimated that annual ionizing radiation exposure from 9,100,000 nuclear cardiology procedures in 2008 could result in an excess of 7,400 incident cancer cases.3 From this same investigative group, incident cancer cases were estimated at 2,700 as a result of exposure following 2,600,000 cardiac computed tomographic (CT) procedures (Figure 1).4 Unlike CT imaging or fluoroscopy, the science and measurement techniques underpinning radiation dose estimates for internally administered radiation is highly variable and subject to uncertainty.
