Summary

Stomatanthes tundavalaensis (Compositae: Eupatorieae: Eupatoriinae), a new species from the Tundavala portion of the Lubango Escarpment, Angola, is described and illustrated. It is compared with the narrow Ethiopian endemic S. meyeri. A synopsis of the four African species of Stomatanthes now recognised is provided indicating full synonymy, citation of types and their known location, together with relevant comments and an indication of their geographical distribution. Criscianthus is synonymised with Stomatanthes, and C. zambiensis with S. zambiensis. A key to the African species is provided.

This publication arises from material collected during a joint South African – Angolan bilateral research programme supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa in the form of grant number 81710 to Prof. Nigel Barker (Dept. Botany, Rhodes University). Ralph Clark, at the time a post-doctoral research fellow working with Peter Linder in Zurich, was heavily involved in planning the project and the fieldwork. Additional funding that helped to support the second author’s participation came from the Bentham-Moxon Trust. Fieldwork and study of collections in Lubango were facilitated by Dra Fernanda Lages and Francisco Maiato at ISCED. The authors would like to thank two anonymous referees for their helpful comments into improving the original script and Margaret Tebbs for providing the black and white illustration.
