Zusammenfassung

Humor und Lachen sind grundlegende und allgegenwärtige Elemente der menschlichen Kommunikation, die den Menschen über seine gesamte Lebensspanne begleiten. Das Humorverständnis, die Humorproduktion (z. B. in Form von Witzen) und die Funktionen von Humor (z. B. als Copingstrategie) verändern sich im Laufe des Lebens und sind wesentlich durch kognitive, sprachliche und soziale Fähigkeiten bestimmt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden die Meilensteine der Entwicklung von Humor und Lachen von der frühen Kindheit bis ins höhere Erwachsenenalter dargestellt. In allen Lebensabschnitten erfüllt der Humor wichtige Funktionen, bei älteren Menschen tritt aber die Bedeutung des Humors als Bewältigungsmechanismus besonders in den Vordergrund. Dennoch ist der Bereich der Humorverarbeitung im Alter (v. a. Humorverständnis, -produktion und emotionale Reaktion) bislang nur unzureichend untersucht.

Abstract

Humor and laughter are fundamental elements of human communication throughout the lifespan. The understanding of humor, humor production (e. g. joking) and functionality of humor (e. g. as a coping strategy) evolve in the course of a lifetime and are essentially determined by cognitive, verbal and social abilities. This review outlines the landmarks in the development of humor and laughter from early childhood to older age. In all stages of life, humor fulfils important functions; in the elderly, however, the function of humor as a coping mechanism gains in importance. Yet, humor processing, such as understanding of humor, humor production and emotional reactions to humor in the elderly, is an underresearched area.
