ions in CaWO4, LaSc3(BO3)4, and YLiF4 crystals are presented. The spectra were measured by a continuous-wave pump and probe technique. It is shown that ESA is a negligible loss mechanism in cw lasers emitting at 1.06 μm. In contrast, the effective emission cross sections in Nd:CaWO4 and Nd:LaSc3(BO3)4 around 1.35 μm are considerably diminished.
