Newfoundlanders as a people live on a diet deficient in fat-soluble and other vitamins.

Functional hemeralopia, not directly associated with beri-beri or scurvy, occurs amongst them. It is rapidly cured by foods rich in Vitamin A.

A similar condition, due to a failure in synthesis of rhodopsin, occurs in Vitamin A-starved rats.

No other condition seems definitely associated with Vitamin A deficiency in Newfoundland.
