Atypical features and prognosis of Wallenberg syndrome: Longitudinal study

Abstract

The lessons of a retrospective study of 24 consecutive cases of Wallenberg syndrome observed during a 6-year span are described: the high frequency of signs and symptoms not considered typical, such as headache, diplopia, supranuclear homolateral facial paresis and homolateral brachiocrural hemiparesis; the unfavorable short term course in a high percentage of cases, and the risk of sudden respiratory arrest.

Viene descritta una serie di 24 casi consecutivi di sindrome di Wallenberg osservati durante 6 anni. Viene sottolineata da un lato l'elevata incidenza di sintomi e segni non considerati tipici, quali la cefalea, la diplopia, la paresi facciale omolaterale di tipo sopranucleare e l'emiparesi brachio-crurale omolaterale, dall'altro la sfavorevole evoluzione a breve termine di una percentuale rilevante di casi, dato in contrasto con quelli della letteratura classica. In particolare viene sottolineato il rischio importante di arresto respiratorio.
