Summary

The solubility of inorganic substances in the developer is considered. It is compared with the chromatographic behaviour of some cations in hydrochloric acid solventsystems and with the stability constants of the chlorocomplexes of these cations. Some other aspects of chromatographic behaviour are studied. The solubility of inorganic substances in polar organic solvents and the behaviour in solvent extraction are also considered. On the basis of these considerations it is concluded that the solubility of inorganic substances in homogeneous solvent mixtures (i.e. completely miscible solvents) is commonly based on the formation of mixed complexes. These complexes can be of various types and they are determined by the competition between anion, solvent and water ligands for coordinating position around the ion.
