R.raphanistrum L.
ssp.landra (Moretti ex DC.)Bonnier etLayens
ssp.raphanistrum
ssp.rostratus (DC.)Thell.
var.rostratus
var.pugioniformis (Boiss.)O. E. Schulz exThell.
R.sativus L.
convar.oleifer (Stokes) Alef.
convar.caudatus (L. fil.)Pistrick
convar.sativus
var.albus DC.
var.niger (Mill.) Kerner
var.sativus
var.violaceus (Peterm.) Alef.
Summary
The highly variable genusRaphanus L. including economically inportant vegetables, fodder- and oil-crops is investigated mainly with regard to morphological-anatomical characters and geographical distribution. Differences concerning the structure of the fruit and the root, growth form and distribution proved to be especially useful for taxonomical purposes. The following classification scheme results:
R. raphanistrum L.
ssp.landra (Moretti ex DC.)
Bonnier etLayens
ssp.raphanistrum
ssp.rostratus (DC.)Thell.
var.rostratus
var.pugioniformis
(Boiss.) O. E.
Schulz exThell.
R. sativus L.
convar.oleifer (Stokes)Alef.
convar.caudatus (L. fil.)
Pistrick
convar.sativus
var. albus DC.
var.niger (Mill.)Kerner
var.sativus
var.violaceus (Peterm.)
Alef.
While the subspecies of the wildRaphanus raphanistrum represent morphologically and geographic-ecologically differentiated taxa, convarieties stand for groups with special directions of usage: convar.oleifer-oil radish, fodder radish; convar.caudatus-serpent radish; convar.sativus-radish, small radish. A classification of convar.sativus is proposed using discontinously varying colour-characters. Keys and descriptions are given for the determination of species and of the infra-specific taxa. Geographical groups are very heterogenous in morphological respect; therefore classified informal only (europaeus-, sinensis-, raphanistroides- groups).
The centre of origin of the cultivated species was situated probably in the Eastern Mediterranean area and the adjacent Near East. All three subspecies ofRaphanus raphanistrum are taken in consideration for the first step of domestication as a vegetable (leaves, roots) of oil-crop in the northwestern part of this region about 4000 years ago.
The variability of wild and cultivated taxa of the genus is endangered by increasing gene erosion. The collection and evaluation of the whole gene pool in gene banks is especially important as valuable for plant breeding and botanical research, too.
R. raphanistrum L.
ssp.landra (Moretti ex DC.)
Bonnier etLayens
ssp.raphanistrum
ssp.rostratus (DC.)
Thell.
var.rostratus
var.pugioniformis
(Boiss.) O. E.

R. sativus L.
convar.oleifer (Stokes)Alef.
convar.caudatus (L. fil.)

var.niger (Mill.)Kerner
var.sativus
