The relationship between basal bodies and the motility ofPolytoma papillatum flagella

The maternal flagellar apparatus of dividing Polytoma papillatum cells lose their basal bodies but retain their motility. It is concluded from this fact that basal bodies are neither essential for the structural maintenance of flagella nor for their motility.
