Russell Hoban has been a television art director at Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborne and a copywriter for Doyle, Dane, Bernbach in New York City. He also taught at the School of Visual Arts there and was a freelance illustrator for eight years. He has been writing children's books since 1958 among them theFrances books,The Sorely Trying Day, The Little Brute Family andThe Mousse and his Child. He has also published a book of poemsThe Pedaling Man. Russell Hoban now lives in London where he is working on several projects includingThe Return of Manny Rat, extracts from which appear in this article which was transcribed from a talk given to the 1970 Exeter conference on children's literature.
