Poly-β-hydroxybutyric (PHB) acid can be determined IR-spectrophotometrically following chloroform extraction from bacterial biomass. The limit of sensitivity with the present instrument was 50 μg/ml. Interferring triglycerides can be estimated by selective adsorption of PHBS on silica gel.
