Summary

In the toad's adenohypophysis, the glycoprotein containing cells of type II (perivascular basophils) undergo important modifications after surgical thyroidectomy. They seem also to be responsible for the production of the thyroid-stimulating-hormone (TSH).

These cells, which become chromophobic and hypertrophie (thyroidectomy cells) after an intense release of the secretory granules, show a great development of the ergastoplasm and a notable extension of the Golgi complex.

The heavy release of the secretory products from the glycoprotein containing cells of type II may take place by intracytoplasmic lysis without destruction of the granule's limiting membrane.
