Abstract

The analysis of diatom assemblages in lake sediments is being increasingly used to reconstruct past trends in the pH of acid lakes. This paper briefly reviews the data that are now available for Europe and North America and concludes that the evidence is consistent with the acid deposition hypothesis for recent lake acidification.
