Om na te na te gaan of eetstoornispatiënten na de behandeling nog alexithymia hebben en moeite hebben met het herkennen, beschrijven en uiten van emoties, werd onderzoek gedaan bij patiënten in de nazorgfase. Daarbij werd gebruik gemaakt van deToronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) en deBermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ). Gemeten met de BVAQ had nog drie kwart van de patiënten alexithymia. Gemeten met de TAS-20 was dat nog maar een kwart. Hoe valt dit grote verschil te verklaren en welke implicaties heeft dit voor de behandeling? Nadere analyse van de meetinstrumenten leverde op dat de TAS-20 alleen de cognitieve component van alexithymia meet, terwijl de BVAQ zowel de cognitieve als de affectieve component van alexithymia meet. De betrouwbaarheid van TAS-20 bleek veel lager dan die van de BVAQ. Om alexithymia bij eetstoornissen te meten, blijkt de BVAQ een geschikter instrument.
