Abstract
It is well known that in a bacterialcell the respirator/ chain undergoes dramatic rearrangements, in response to changes in oxygen tension. The physiological advantage of those rearrangements remains obscure and they are incompatible with the growth rate variations of cultures. Therefore, one cannot completely exclude a however improbable misinterpretation of the pertinent experimental results. In the present paper, we put forth the hypothesis that when the oxygen tension is lowering, a prompt response of the respiratory chain occurs. The two halves of the chain previously travelled over by electrons in series, are now travelled over in parallel, with the doubling of the active sites on which oxygen is reduced. Then, a later response must take place and the chain must resume the previous configuration, discharging in the medium as products of mixed acid fermentation part of the carbon flux entering the cell. Let τm be the aerobic doubling time of the biological mass in the culture. With lowering oxygen tension, the growth rate undergoes a tew successive sudden slowing down and the first new doubling times of the bacterial mass τ′ m must be: τ′ m =p τm, with:p = 1.33, 1.5, 2.0. These expectations were tested reexamining all the experiments of bacterial growth made in our laboratory in well controlled conditions in the previous years. We have found that they are incredibly well satisfied, within a few per cent.
