Geologische Rundschau Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The sedimentary basin of Kandi (9000 km2) is a southwestern extension of the Iullemmeden basin (Niger) and of the Sokoto basin (Nigeria). It consists of intracratonic depressions, probably in the range of epeirogenic swells of the Precambrian basement, together with the likely influence of the shales-quartzites alternation on the geomorphology. A more subsident graben, framed by faults and filled by quartzous conglomerates, limits the western border.

In these depressions, a large spreading of arenites-siltites took place (thickness lower than 500 m), which was probably connected on the one hand to a warm, more or less humid climate with alternate seasons and on the other hand to slight recurrences of faulted compartments; the latter result in a noticeable modification of the fluviatile system (northward direction) which is anastomosed and shifts in alluvial plains (sea is situated at more than 400 km northeastern).

These predominantly red formations resulting from successive reworkings of lateritic soils (siderolithic facies) are texturally immature but mineralogically evolved, they are characterized by cross beddings, stream channels, graded beddings and suggest molassic deposits from a descriptive point of view.

Silicified woods were dated of the Lower Cretaceous but they are more or less reworked.
