Abstract

In view of the current literature, the digitalization of companies is a very broad topic and is discussed in many different ways. In order to provide researchers and practitioners an overview of the topic, our article analyzes numerous contributions from academic databases and summarizes them according to specific topical clusters.

Thereby, our article focusses on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they differ fundamentally from large companies due to lower budgets, shorter decision-making processes and often strong niche expertise. Therefore, we aim to discuss different aspects of the digitalization of enterprises in the specific context of SMEs and to point out specific questions and recommendations for SME managers. This article provides a state-of-the-art view of the current digitalization literature with a specific SME focus and provides scientists with questions for further research as well as for practitioners recommendations for strategy development. Furthermore, implications for the IT organization and IT service management are derived.
