Inorganic Materials Aims and scope

Abstract

The high-temperature behavior of different polymorphs of the compounds Na3Ca2(SO4)3F, Na3Cd2(SO4)3Cl, and Na3Pb2(SO4)3Cl with the apatite structure has been studied for the first time by high-temperature X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The sodium cadmium chloride trisulfate has been shown to undergo a phase transition at 494 K, which involves a reduction in unit-cell symmetry from hexagonal to monoclinic. The sodium calcium chloride trisulfate undergoes a phase transition at 897 K, which involves a reduction in symmetry from hexagonal to orthorhombic and a breakup of the apatite structure. We have determined the linear and volume expansivities of the three compounds.
