Appraising sufficiency of financial support for older adults in Anambra State, Nigeria

Abstract

Older adults are highly associated with frailty and disengagement from income-generating activities, hence the high tendency for financial dependence. We sought to know from 20 older adults aged 75 years and above, residing in Anambra state, if they consider the financial support provided to them especially by their support systems as sufficient. The cumulative inequality theory helped in providing a framework, while data were analyzed thematically. Findings show inadequate, suboptimal and uncoordinated financial support for older adults from family members, and other sources (NGOs, churches, and philanthropists). The roles social workers could play in advocating, facilitating and coordinating financial resources for older adults were highlighted.
