Step by Step: How to Investigate Medieval Footwear

Abstract

The selection of research methods depends on many factors, including a number of finds, their state of preservation, and research problems discussed. In the archaeological studies of the medieval leather objects each stage of the research process is important: from recovering a source from cultural layers, securing and conserving a find, to analysing formal features and preparing detailed typologies, what ultimately leads to an attempt to recreate selected historical issues. In this article it is presenting a method for studying medieval archaeological finds made of leather (mainly footwear). It is an attempt to find research methods for presenting the development line of the medieval shoemaking in the period from the turn of the eighth century and the beginning of the ninth century until the end of the fifteenth century. In the case of large assemblages consisting of hundreds, or even thousands of objects, obviously finished items and their components come to the fore. In such cases, the rest of objects referred to as ‘fragments’, ‘pieces of leather’, ‘unidentified objects’ are usually marginalised. In the studies of economic phenomena, however, products cannot be perceived as less important, because each of them might be a valuable source of information, depending on questions asked. The hierarchy of importance of items (or only their features) should change with the research progress and with the issues examined.

Le choix des méthodes de recherche dépend de nombreux facteurs, notamment d’un certain nombre de découvertes, de leur état de préservation et des problèmes de recherche faisant l'objet d'une discussion. Dans les études archéologiques des objets médiévaux en cuir, chaque étape du processus de recherche est importante : que ce soit l'extraction d'une source à partir de couches culturelles, la réalisation et la conservation d'une découverte, l'analyse de caractéristiques formelles et la préparation de typologies détaillées, ceci conduisant à terme à une tentative afin de recréer des questions historiques choisies. Cet article est une présentation d'une méthode d'étude de découvertes archéologiques médiévales faites de cuir (essentiellement des chaussures). Dans le cadre d'une tentative visant à identifier des méthodes de recherche aux fins d'une présentation de la ligne de développement de la cordonnerie médiévale durant la période inscrite entre le tournant du 8ème siècle et le début du 9ème siècle jusqu'à la fin du 15ème siècle. Dans le cas des vastes assemblages se composant de centaines, voire de milliers d'objets, il est évident que les pièces finies et leurs composants prévalent. Dans ces cas, le reste des objets désignés comme des « fragments », « morceaux de cuir », « objets non identifiés » sont habituellement marginalisés. Cependant, dans les études du phénomène économique, les produits ne sauraient être perçus comme moins importants, car chacun d'entre eux est susceptible d'être une source précieuse d'informations, en fonction des questions posées. La hiérarchie de l'importance des pièces (ou seulement leurs caractéristiques) doit évoluer conformément à la progression de la recherche et aux questions étudiées.

Resumen

La selección de los métodos de investigación depende de muchos factores, incluidos varios hallazgos, su estado de conservación y los problemas de investigación que se aborden. En los estudios arqueológicos de los objetos de cuero medievales, cada etapa del proceso de investigación es importante: desde la recuperación de una fuente de capas culturales, la obtención y conservación de un hallazgo, hasta el análisis de características formales y la preparación de tipologías detalladas, lo que finalmente conduce a un intento de recrear las cuestiones históricas seleccionadas. En este artículo se presenta un método para el estudio de los hallazgos arqueológicos medievales de cuero (principalmente calzado). Es un intento de encontrar métodos de investigación para presentar la línea de desarrollo de la zapatería medieval en el período comprendido entre finales del siglo VIII y principios del siglo IX hasta finales del siglo XV. En el caso de grandes conjuntos formados por cientos o incluso miles de objetos, obviamente los artículos terminados y sus componentes pasan a primer plano. En tales casos, el resto de los objetos denominados "fragmentos", "piezas de cuero", "objetos no identificados" suelen quedar marginados. En los estudios de los fenómenos económicos, sin embargo, los productos no pueden percibirse como menos importantes, porque cada uno de ellos puede ser una valiosa fuente de información, según las interrogantes que se planteen. La jerarquía de importancia de los elementos (o solo sus características) debería cambiar con el progreso de la investigación y con los temas examinados.

  6. Research on the issue of footwear in the area of the Barbaricum is in a great disproportion to studies of the Roman footwear. First of all, there are no iconographic and written sources, whereas material sources are rare. The oldest finds that give an opportunity to take up the topic of structural and stylistic development are from the end of the eighth century. It used to be believed that the oldest form was one-piece footwear entirely made from one piece of leather, without a separate sole, directly referring to the aforementioned prehistoric finds (Wiklak, 1969, 486; Swann, 2001; Kowalska, 2003, 159–160). In the area of present-day Poland and generally on the southern Baltic coast the origin of the sole as component of the footwear to which the upper part covering the foot was sewn in is not clear. Owing to the lack of archaeological sources it is very difficult to determine on which impulses the rules and methods of constructing footwear were shaped among the Slavic communities inhabiting the lands by the Baltic Sea in the early Middle Ages.
