Abstract

In this paper, arguments about sexuality, masculinity and immigration are explained using a case study of one man with SCI. As consequence of relocation into new social and bodily territories, Robert (pseudonym) was forced to manage multiple losses and disruptions to his previously scripted life which resulted in an invalidated adulthood, sexuality, and masculinity. We examine how Robert recovers them by performing narratives to reconnect with past achievements in traditionally masculine domains. One of these (sport) is associated with physical strength and agility, and sexual prowess and fitness; the other (political activism) is linked to culturally idealized masculine traits such as courage and bravado. Emphasis is given to the importance of verbal and textual performances as a therapeutic vehicle in illness experiences.
