Panoramic Spectroscopy of Galaxies with Star-Formation Regions. A Study of SBS 1539+597

  • Published:
Astrophysics Aims and scope

The results of detailed studies of the galaxy with star-formation activity SBS 1539+597 based on panoramic spectroscopy are presented. This work was done as part of our project for the comprehensive study of ~500 galaxies in seven selected fields of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS). The observations of SBS 1539+597 were made on the 6-m telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using the multipupil MPFS spectrograph. The data presented here include two-dimensional charts of the major parameters of the emission in the Balmer Hα line, the forbidden doublets of nitrogen [NII] 6548, 6583 and sulfur [SII] 6716, 6731, and the continuum. A detailed analysis of the data reveals, in particular: a star-formation region in the central part of the galaxy, where two HII regions are differentiated (the brighter one is identified with the object SDSS J154019.70 + 593606.1); a small turbulent region adjacent to them; and predominant rotation of the radiating gases over the disk structure of which a separation of the outgoing branch that begins in the starformation region is clearly visible. Numerical values are given for the major parameters describing the star-formation region and the galaxy as a a whole.
