Abstract

Detectability of gravitational waves emitted by newly born, hot, rapidly rotating neutron stars as they spin down due to the r-mode instability is discussed. It is shown that differential rotation induced by r-modes plays a fundamental role in the evolution of the mode’s instability, making it more difficult to detect these gravitational waves.
