More recently, evolutionary developmental biologists have proposed that human female orgasm could be functionally related to reproduction by triggering ovulation, a physiological trait of a common mammalian ancestor that is retained by some modern mammals, but no longer expressed in spontaneously ovulating humans; see Pavličev and Wagner (2016).
