Notes

  1. The plan is slightly modified and the case study in chapter 5 of the French edition devoted to the controversy over “stock options in times of crisis” is replaced by “The Controversy About Thomas Friedman's Op-Ed on the Mexican Wall”.

  2. The transition from French to English requires a terminological adjustment: “in most of the cases where French would mention a ‘polémique’, English would rather speak of a ‘public controversy (p. 27) […] “‘polemic’ means a discursive attack again an Other (it designates polemical discourse) whereas ‘polemics’ is quite close to controversy (‘the art of practicing controversy’) and can be considered as its synonym” (p. 28).

  3. The idea of alternative rationalities, which problematizes the notion of universal reason, is the subject of issue 25 (2020) of the journal Argumentation & Analyse du Discours (Discours sociaux et régimes de rationalité). It is a stimulating research direction with considerable stakes, but which requires great caution.

  4. Plantin, C. (2005): "We can call argumentative sites, places that organize debate and allow certain questions to be dealt with according to the norms of a culture".
