Abstract

Spatial orientation and equilibrium control are the basal functions of the postural and goal-directed motor system. In children with disturbed movement coordination and vertigo-like symptoms, after organic or systemic causes have been excluded, consideration must be given to segmental dysfunctions of the proprioceptive key regions of the axial division of the skeletal system. Such disturbances can be identified by functional manual diagnostics and qualitative assessment of movement control. For example, attention is paid to neurophysiological characteristics of descending stairs or hopping on one leg. Disorders of these types of movement activities can be affected by treatment of the neck proprioceptors in the form of atlas therapy according to Arlen. In addition to disappearance of the vertigo symptoms and improvement of body control, this routinely also leads to progress in fine motor, linguistic, and cognitive development.
