Rootknot-eelworm resistance in some South American tuber-forming Solanum species

Summary

A representative collection of 560 wild and cultivated primitiveSolanums from Chile, Argentina and Bolivia were tested for their resistance to four species ofMeloidogyne. Resistance was observed in some indigenousSolanum tuberosum cultivars from North Argentine irrigation valleys and from the Bolivian border region. The following wild potatoes showedMeloidogyne resistance:Solnanum bijugum Bitter,S. commersonii Dun.,S. chacoense Bitter,S. tascalense Brücher and an undescribed species from “Fraile Pintado-Chalican.”

Resumen

Una coleccion representativa de 560 formas silvestres y primitivas cultivares deSolanum procedentes de Chile, Argentina y Bolivia fué sometido a un test de resistencia contraMeloidogyne. Hasta ahora no se conocia ninguna resistencia genetica contra nematodos de los raices. Se observo resistencia en algunos cultivares indigenas de los valles de irrigacion del Norte Argentina y de la zona limitrofe de Bolivia. Ademas, los siguientes papas silvestres se destacaron por su resistencia contra Meloidogyne:Solanum bijugum Bitter,S. commersonii Dun.,S. chacoense Bitter,S. tascalense Brücher y una especie todavia no descrita de “Fraile Pintado-Chalican.”
