Summary
A second-order closure model is developed for turbulence within a canopy. In parameterizing each term in the Reynolds stress equation the drag force created by canopy elements is treated just like the buoyant force. With this second-order closure model an experiment in a wind tunnel is analyzed in order to get knowledge about the characteristics of the canopy flow, which makes it possible to simplify the equations. A simple mathematical expression for the turbulence intensity within a canopy is obtained. Good agreement between computed and directly observed profiles of the turbulence intensity is found. The calculations point out, however, also a weakness of the simplified equation.
