Summary

As the data, presented in this lecture, have been published elsewhere (see references), only a summary is given here.

A comparison was made between the plankton assemblages of the mesoand polyhaline ranges of Lake Veere and the Westerschelde estuary. Species composition, densities and seasonal distributions of the predominant planktonic organisms of the investigated brackish water ecosystems were quite different, depending on several other environmental factors than salinity.
