Ueber die horizontale Komponente der atmosphärischen Lichtbrechung

Summary

By ranging rays of light to long lines, it will become especially evident, that the light is measurably influenced by normal horizontal refraction in atmosphere. But by practically ranging up such beams with a corresponding accuracy, one found much more effect as could be explicated by refraction. The source of such discordance here has been found in some geometrical effects with regard to the introduced surface, by which the discordance vanishes and a physical influence remains, fully agreeing with theory and practice.

Résumé

Dans l'atmosphère les rayons lumineux sont affectés par une réfraction horizontale normale, qui devient sensible avec les parcours très longues. D'ailleurs l'analyse expérimentale du phénomène, conduite avec une précision convenable, a demontré l'existence d'une influence tellement agrandie, qu'elle ne peut pas être expliquée par la seule réfraction. L'auteur a trouvé dans ce mémoir la source de telle discordance en des effets géométriques par rapport à la surface introduite, qui réduisent l'anomalie à une grandeur bien en accord avec la théorie et la pratique.
