Abstract
The convergence difficulties in the method of configurational interaction can be overcome by the use of Löwdin'S natural orbitals (NO) as basis functions. In the two electron case these can be determined rather easily as the solutions of a system of integro-differential equations by an iteration method of which the conventional Hartree-Foek-Scheme is the first approximation. The discussion of the degeneracy of the first order density matrix and the symmetry properties of the NO suggests different forma of the natural expansion as well as different systems of equations for a ground state, a non symmetrical singlet and a triplet state.
