Summary
The surface of a healthy and of a psoriatic skin were examined with the aid of a “Stereoscan” electron microscope. The following observations were noted:
-
1.
The normal skin surface shows more artificial shrinkage than the psoriatic, but it remains continuous, arranged in fields and craters.
-
2.
The fields and craters arrangement of normal skin surface is replaced in psoriatic skin surface by a new discontinuous arrangement of horny cells — that of the scale.
-
3.
Numerous psoriatic horny cells show a central convexity of cell body, which is lacking in normal horny cells.
-
4.
The horny cells of normal skin are more closely indented than those of psoriatic skin.
-
5.
The surface pattern of psoriatic horny cells is regionally rougher than that of normal cells.
Some of these findings suggest that psoriatic horny cells may be harder and less flexible than normal horny cells.
