  3. The actual date of February 12 is a guess on my part. Mid-February is clearly indicated; the 12th is likely because many times in his life Darwin chose to begin a program of activities on a near key date, such as Christmas, or New Year's, or his birthday, which was February 12.

  5. Item # 128 in the Darwin Papers collection is the notebook on “Books read and to be Read,” which continues roughly where the first notebook left off and goes on up to 1860.

  6. Of the titles that appear in the “To be read” half of the notebook, approximately one fourth have been crossed out by Darwin-indicating that he had seen them. This is consistent with their appearance in the “Books read” section. Several items not crossed out do appear in the “Books read” section; thus there may be non-crossed-out items that were read by him. However, since this is very tenuous historical evidence for a reading by Darwin, I will not expand the transcriptions in this paper to include all such entries from this part of the notebook.
