Abstract
The extraordinary physico-chemical properties of nanoparticles (NPs) as compared to its bulk counterpart led to the prioritized entry of nanoparticles into consumer goods and in biomedical applications. The usage of nanoparticles in a wide variety of applications is quite beneficial but is also raising concerns about their plausible effect on human health. The enhanced capacity of nanoparticles due to its size to cross the tissue barrier can be a double-edged sword as it may be useful in the field of medicine to facilitate drug delivery or gene therapy for the treatment of diseases like neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, etc. that requires crossing from blood-brain barrier (BBB). On the other hand, nanoparticles exhibit increased diffusivity and reactivity which may cause greater accumulation into the biological system and thereby may exert adverse health risks. Moreover, the regular usage of nanoparticle-based consumer goods increases the susceptibility of nanoparticles entering the human body via dermal contact, inhalation, or ingestion and interfering with the biological system. However, a proper evaluation of nanoparticles is of paramount interest as safe dose of nanoparticle incorporation in consumer goods will provide all the benefits without any adverse effect. Therefore, a comprehensive toxicological study for evaluation of the safe dose of nanoparticles is crucial to yield its benefits.
This chapter aims to promote tremendous advantages of miraculous nanoparticles by simply evaluating its safe dose before incorporating in consumer products as well as in biomedical application to delineate the risk and side effects caused by higher concentration of nanoparticles.
