Abstract
This chapter has been termed an excursus because it describes a segmental approach to phonological parsing which uses only a few of the notions introduced in the previous chapters. However, this segmental approach defines the starting point of constraint-based phonological parsing by employing segment-based phonotactic structure constraints in a feature-based phonotactic network (FPN) to provide strings of allophonic feature bundles with a phonological representation in terms of syllables. The FPN has been extended to represent an allophonic and a phonemic level and is interpreted by a finite state transducer. The nonsegmental approach which relies on events is presented in the next chapter.
