Abstract
It seems best, however, at this point to devote some attention to the development of poetry in general in the period under discussion. This development can partly be seen in Pudjangga Baru, which contained new poems by a variety of writers in each of its issues. But poetry was published outside Pudjangga Baru too, poetry partly in the same spirit, and partly much more closely tied to older traditions. Detailed research into this poetry has never been undertaken, and probably much of it will be lost for ever, in view of the incomplete documentation, Takdir has done good work in bringing together the most important and typical examples of it in his anthology Puisi Baru, published for the first time in 1946, with an interesting introduction on old and new poetry, and with short but useful biographical and bibliographical notes. Other important sources of information on the poetry of this period are his series of articles on modern poetry in Pudjangga Baru which have been mentioned earlier, and especially Jassin’s anthology from Pudjangga Baru (1963), with its very valuable introduction and its reliable factual information, which extends also to the short biographies of the authors mentioned. The following short survey is mainly based on these works.
