UBV Star Counts in Selected Area 54, and Global Structure of the Galaxy

Abstract

We have obtained new UBV star count data in 16 square degrees centered on Selected Area 54 [(l, b) = (200°,+59°)], based on 10 plates taken with the Kiso Schmidt telescope.

We have constructed a model for the Galaxy based on systematic analysis of wide-area surveyed star counts, including our new data in SA54. Our results are summarized as follows: the sun is situated at 40pc north from the mid-plane of the disc; the scale length of the thin disc is 3.8kpc; the scale height of the thick disc is 900pc; the axial ratio of the spheroid is 0.84; local normalization of the thick disc relative to the thin disc is 0.019 and that of the spheroid is 1/900.
