Abstract

A basic assumption in theories of rational decision making is that preferences should be transitive (Edwards, 1954, 1961; Luce & Suppes, 1965; Samuelson, 1953). A preference-or-indifference relation, denoted ≳, is transitive if for all x, y and z

$$ x{\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\thicksim}$}}{ > }}y\,and\,y\,{\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\thicksim}$}}{ > }}z\,imply\,x{\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\thicksim}$}}{ > }}z. $$
